Artificial Grass Playground Surfacing

Artificial grass (also referred to as artificial turf, synthetic turf, or fake grass) is an increasingly popular playground surfacing choice for parks, schools, neighborhoods, and more because it is easy to maintain and cost effective. It provides the look of real grass, but does not require mowing or additional maintenance. Today’s synthetic turf is not the turf of the 80’s and 90’s. With blended, high quality fibers, manufacturers are able to mimic the natural look and feel of grass in a way that is unlike anything available in the past, and  do so more affordably.

Benefits of Synthetic Grass Safety Surfacing

Our synthetic turf playground surfacing has a double layer of protection: a recycled foam pad underneath the turf as well as the added cushioning of the synthetic turf top layer. The special foam padding is made from 100% recycled materials. Available in thicknesses between 1 inch to 4½ inches, this durable, closed cell padding is adequate for fall heights up to 12 feet.

Fake grass is also an exceptionally sanitary surfacing material because only natural rounded silica sand is used for infill, not crumb rubber. The sand only reaches about 1/16th of an inch, so it makes the turf resilient and helps with impact attenuation but is extremely difficult for children to access. And you can forget about grass allergies, rubber toxicity, bacteria buildup, staining, and insects.

When it comes to seasonal adaptation, artificial turf surfacing can get hot under direct sun, but the padding underneath won’t harden under high temperatures and stays fairly cool. The system doesn’t retain moisture and has excellent drainage, so cold weather brings minimal issues.

How Much Does Artificial Turf Surface Cost?

The two primary factors that will determine the cost of any safety surfacing project are the choice of surfacing material and total area to be covered. Artificial grass is typically a more costly option up-front than loose-fill materials like wood or rubber mulch. However, it should be noted that because synthetic turf surfacing does not require routine maintenance, the long term costs are greatly reduced when compared to loose-fill alternatives.
